Gone are the days when people hurriedly accept award nominations because they believe the awarding body/organization is credible enough and has a reputation with which they (the nominees) can sell out or to an extent acquire a bragging right to foster progress on a wider or more recognized platform(s).
The prestige of an award usually depends on the status of the awarder and it is so sad a thing to note that, nowadays people out of anxiety of being nominated in a category fail to check for certain standards before accepting the nomination.
In this era of social media and networking, any award organizer without good publicity strength (social media presence and otherwise) should be severely scrutinized for credibility as chances are that they’re simply in the process of converting the social strengths of the nominees to their’s by using the “like before vote” or “follow before vote” algorithms.
An award may or may not have attached to it monetary incentives.
To test for credibility, if the awarding body has poor social media presence (publicity power in general) then there should be some sort of incentive to compensate for their publicity weakness which the nominees were supposed to enjoy!
After all the time spent in giving free publicity can be converted to money.
These days award ceremonies are littered all over the world and too bad the majority of these award ceremonies are not prestigious because the brand giving out the award isn’t reputable .
Majority of these brands come out all of a sudden and start nominations for a certain award or the other, camouflaged to have the interest of the nominees at heart but behind the scenes it is for their own selfish interests.
Imagine a company purportedly organizing an award ceremony, with poor social media presence, no/unprofessional website, zero funding and decides to nominate say WIZKID. Sounds absurd right? Oh yes it is, one needs no prophet or soothsayer to decipher that the algorithm employed is one intended to boost the organizers popularity.
OK check this out; an award organizer clearly stated that before nominees and fans can vote, they must first like, follow and subscribe to all 7 social media pages of the organizer. My people is this right? Where have you ever seen such complex voting procedures??
While some awards have monetary benefits attached to them, others don’t. If one is to be nominated in an award with no monetary value then that award needs to hold a high line in award prestige and awarder status in the business.
Remember that the prestige of an award depends on the status of the awarder.
OK, imagine you won a MAMA (MTV Africa Music Award), believe me even if you weren’t given monetary token, the prestige of winning a MAMA alone will definitely be a game changer in your career. Why? because MTV as a brand has a reputable status.
After all said, it is advisable to know the status of an awarder before throwing in your hard earned publicity force into what’s not worth it.
